Want an instant lawn that looks lush and level from day one?

Installing sod is the fastest way to get there—but success depends on how well you prep the area. Whether you're doing a new build, a backyard overhaul, or fixing up patchy grass, here's how to prep and lay sod like a pro.

Step 1: Measure the Area

Before you order sod, measure the length and width of your lawn space. Multiply to get the square footage, then divide by 9 to calculate how many rolls of sod you’ll need (1 roll typically covers 9 sq. ft.).

*Always add 5–10% for waste and trimming.

Step 2: Clear the Ground

Remove all old grass, weeds, and debris. Use a sod cutter or shovel to strip away the top layer. Rake the soil to remove large clumps or rocks. This step is crucial—sod won’t root well if it’s laid over compacted or uneven ground.

Step 3: Grade for Drainage

Use a landscaping rake to level the area, sloping the soil slightly away from buildings or structures to prevent pooling water. This is your chance to fix uneven terrain or low spots that cause soggy patches later.

Step 4: Add Fresh Soil (Optional, But Recommended)

For best results, add 1–2 inches of screened topsoil or lawn soil blend to encourage deep root growth. This helps with water retention and nutrient delivery.

💡 Pro Tip: If you’re in Ottawa or the surrounding area, you can order fresh topsoil by the yard from our local depot. Pickup or delivery available.

Step 5: Water the Base Soil

Lightly water the soil before laying sod—it should be moist but not muddy. This helps the roots bond to the ground quickly once installed.

Step 6: Lay Sod in Rows

Start along a straight edge like a driveway or fence line. Stagger the sod like bricks, pressing edges tightly together without overlapping. Use a knife to trim curves or around obstacles.

Walk lightly on sod as you install—use a board to distribute weight if needed.

Step 7: Roll It Down

Use a lawn roller to press the sod firmly against the soil. This removes air pockets and improves root contact.

Step 8: Water, Water, Water

Water immediately after installation. Then keep the sod moist (but not flooded) for 2–3 weeks. The first watering should soak the soil 3–4 inches deep. After that, water daily until roots are established.

Step 9: Wait Before Mowing

Avoid mowing for 2–3 weeks, until the sod is rooted and resists gentle tugs. Then raise your mower blades and trim the lawn gently.
